About the role

The Policy and Government Affairs Lead plays a key role in shaping how BASE influences policy and systems change. You will lead day-to-day policy development and government engagement, ensuring that evidence, lived experience and practice are translated into clear, credible and compassionate policy influence.

This is an outward-facing role focused on building relationships, influencing decision-makers and ensuring that the voices of disabled people and others facing disadvantage are heard where decisions are made. Working closely with the Research and Policy Manager, you will help strengthen BASE’s role as a trusted, values-led voice in national and local policy.

Role & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead drafting of clear, evidence-informed policy briefings, position statements and consultation responses.
  • Bring together lived experience, research and frontline practice to shape BASE's policy priorities.
  • Monitor and summarise policy developments affecting disabled people and inclusive employment.
  • Build and maintain constructive relationships with civil servants, ministers, MPs, advisers, local authorities and public bodies.
  • Organise and support meetings, roundtables, parliamentary briefings and external events.
  • Represent BASE in policy networks, coalitions, APPGs and sector forums.
  • Work collaboratively with BASE members, employers and other stakeholders to strengthen collective impact.
Skills & Requirements

Requirements

  • Experience in policy, public affairs or influencing within a charity, public body or related organisation.
  • Experience of building positive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good knowledge of how public policy is developed and influenced in the UK.
  • Ability to contribute to policy workplans and translate policy change into implications for practice.
  • Good knowledge of ICT systems, including CRM and Office packages.

  • Experience working on disability, employment, social justice or public service reform.
  • Experience involving people with lived experience in shaping policy or influencing activity.
  • Experience working with coalitions, alliances or networks.
  • Ability to use CRM software and Microsoft tools such as Power BI.
  • Confidence in understanding and challenging discriminatory practice.
  • Familiarity with supported employment or evidence-based employment models.
