Practitioner of the Year Awards 2010

BASE is proud to announce the winners of its inaugural Practitioner of the Year Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate outstanding practice in the field of supported employment in the UK and reflect the personal achievement, innovation and commitment of individuals in supporting sustainable employment. The focus of the awards is on promoting the remarkable work that goes on across the country to help people with disabilities get the support they need to achieve their work aspirations and retain paid employment.

BASE launches 2011 Practitioner Awards

BASE has launched its search for nominations for the 2011 Practitioner Awards. Awards are being offered for excellence in supporting people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and sensory impairments. There is also an award for supporting employers. One of the winners will be chosen as Practitioner of the Year. The awards will be presented at the BASE annual conference in Cardiff on 7 September.

BASE held its 2011 Practitioner of the Year awards at our conference dinner at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 7 September. The winners received an award and cash prize. BASE would like to thank Momentum, Pluss and the Centre for Mental Health for supporting these awards.

The awards recognise excellence in supporting jobseekers with a range of disabilities. There is also an award for excellence in supporting employers.

Finding the right pathway to employment

North Yorkshire Council has published an online guide to navigating the system. The 'Employment pathways' document acts as a guide for people seeking employment or training, taking you through the options available for your circumstances.

NMHDU - urgent call for good practice information

The National Mental Health Delivery Unit (part of the Department of Health) are developing a website to promote good practice in supporting people with mental health problems into work. They are looking for information on

First Fines Issued for Data Protection Breaches

The Information Commissioner now has the power to fine businesses up to £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act. Fines will be made when, in the opinion of the Information Commissioner, the breach is likely to cause damage or distress to the individual whose confidentially has been breached.

Tremovah staff win national customer service award

Two Cornwall Council employees who provide equipment for people with disabilities have won a national customer service award. Lyn Palmer and Derek Hill, who both work at Tremorvah Industries, have jointly received the Employee of the Year award from the British Healthcare Trades Association.

Informal consultation on job coach standards

Further to the publication of the draft Job Coach (supported employment) standards, the Department of Health is now seeking the views of stakeholders before agreeing the final version of the standards and definition. This includes agreeing the terminology to be used to describe both supported employment and job coaches. BASE will be responding to this request. Please let us know what you think of the draft standards by 21 January 2011 so that we can reflect your views.
