WISE (Swansea) set to close

WISE, the Welsh Initiative for Supported Employment, is set to close its doors after providing supported employment services in the Swansea area for the last 27 years. The service will close on 26 September and says that changes brought about by the introduction of the Prime Providers and the tendering processes have been instrumental in WISE being unable to continue the exceptional service it has provided over the past 27 years.

CDG and Shaw Trust announce merger

The employment services charities Shaw Trust and Careers Development Group (CDG) are to merge and form a new organisation.

The announcement comes after a thorough due diligence process confirmed a merger would be positive for the people both charities serve. It would strengthen the ability of staff to deliver learning and skills, training and job opportunities to get people into or back to work and live more independent lives. Currently, CDG and Shaw Trust offer different services in different parts of the country and bring complementary strengths and expertise.

Work Choice provider guidance updated

The changes are listed below:

Section 1
• Added new ESF Match Funding requirements, links etc

Section 2
• Amended 2.16 to state that the whole of form WCSR01 needs to be sent to JCP, not just page one.

Section 3
• Added bullet requiring the Provider to explain what support they will give to participants with any travel and childcare costs.

NCVO drafting code of practice for public / private cooperation

SERCO and NCVO are working together to produce a code to promote good practice and co-operative working between the private sector and voluntary and community sector in the delivery of public services. They’re seeking your comments as they draft this tool.

Work Choice providers agree recommendations

BASE and ERSA have submitted a recommendations report to the Minister for Disabled People following a consultation event attended by Work Choice providers on 26 April.

Published jointly with the British Institute of Learning Disabilites (BILD), this guide sets out what the key issues around personalisation and supported employment are, particularly for people with a learning disability and people with autism. It describes the supported employment model and current funding streams that can be used. The guide explores some of the challenges for jobseekers and for supported employment providers and how these might be overcome. The booklet costs £4 and is available from the BILD bookstore.

Managing Department for Work and Pensions contracts - Ofsted thematic report

Please note that this review took place before inspection of DWP contracts ended in August 2010.

This small-scale review outlines the practice of some successful Department for Work and Pensions prime contractors in managing their subcontractors. Inspectors visited 10 prime contractors where leadership and management had been judged good at the last inspection and performance was improving. The review identifies the key characteristics of successful practice and includes guidance questions that providers might use as a prompt for evaluation and to improve the quality of their work.
