The Canadian Government has published a report that identifies best employment practices and records the success stories of people with disabilities. Rethinking disAbility in the Private Sector is the report of the Panel on Labour Market Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities that was formed earlier this year.

The panel was created to research on people with disabilities in the workplace to:
* Focus on the best practices to giving people with disabilities employment opportunities
* Explain how both individuals and businesses benefit from hiring people with disabilities

Research into use of pre-employment health questionnaires

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published guidance and a research report on the use of pre-employment questionnaires. Section 60 of the Equality Act 2010 makes it generally unlawful to ask questions about disability and health before a job offer is made.

The research focused on the recruitment practices of employers relating to collecting information about a job applicant’s health prior to any offer of work being made. Such health inquiries are prohibited under Section 60 of the Equality Act 2010 unless they fall under a prescribed set of exemptions.

New HSE toolkit for small businesses

The Health & Safety Executive has published a toolkit to support small businesses. The new Health and Safety Toolbox is the latest in a package of online guidance, bringing together in one place everything a small, low-risk business could need to manage health and safety. Written with busy firms in mind, it makes it easy to find relevant guidance on specific risks with a few clicks of the mouse.

It builds on Health and Safety Made Simple which provides sufficient basic information for large numbers of low risk businesses.

Skills for Care compiling recruitment resources for social care employers

Mind, the mental health charity, had published a report, ‘Taking care of business’ which sets out how employers feel mental health can be more positively promoted and managed at work, using testimonies, best-practice case studies and recommendations.

Amongst other points, the report highlights the importance of ensuring that mental health is safeguarded during change management processes, and also stresses the important role that line managers have in spotting early signs of mental health issues.
