Ministerial statement on Remploy - 27 sites confirmed for closure
Minister for Disabled People, Maria Miller has confirmed the closure of 27 Remploy factories. The future of 9 hangs in the balance following a decision to accept business plans for nine of the threatened sites. Miller issued a ministerial statement giving some detail on the bids received and proposals to support workers whose jobs will go.
She confirmed an £8 million support package for employees affected for up to 18 months, including a Personal Case Worker to help individuals with their future choices, as well as access to a personal budget for additional support. Surprisingly for a personal budget, it appears that only Remploy themselves will be able to offer this support through their Employment Services division.
The 9 factories that may still survive include 4 in England, 3 in Scotland and 2 in Wales.
