These guidelines aim to provide organisations of all sizes with some practical guidance that will better inform and support employers and employees coping with a chronic health condition in the workplace.

Almost all employers will have employees who have or will develop a chronic condition, many of which fluctuate in their expression. Such conditions are a challenge to both employers and employees: often people wish to continue to work, but to do this need knowledge of their condition, good clinical care, and a positive understanding employer.

From May 2010, Yorkshire and Humber Improvement Partnership (YHIP) delivered a programme of free-to-attend one-day awareness raising courses specifically targeting line managers. This was part of its PSA 16 delivery strategy, to support the development of that general approach to mental health and employment. This programme of courses, Mental Health in the Workplace: Skills for Line Managers, was delivered by 15 individual companies and organisations.
