Advertising your vacancy
The most popular methods of advertising vacancies are through the internet, media jobs pages, organisational web sites, recruitment agencies and newspapers. Many companies continue to recruit through word of mouth.
Other low or no cost methods to consider:
You can widen the visibility of the job advert by targeting the following areas, community centres, local supported employment agencies, specialist support organisations i.e. RNIB, RNID, voluntary organisations and further and higher education providers. Some organisations issue job vacancy bulletins and distribute them widely through voluntray sector organisations.
Check the wording of the advert and make sure that it complies with equality legislation. Include a statement that states your intention to consider and make adjustments where necessary. Encourage people to disclose any individual needs around the recruitment process. This may include communication or mobility needs. a disability by offering or welcoming support from disability professionals.
Some examples:
"Please contact us if we can assist in any way with your application or adjust the processes that we use to recruit"
Many organisations offer a guaranteed interview to people with disabilities if they meet the minimum essential criteria.
"If you have a disability and you meet the minimum essential criteria you will be guaranteed an interview"
This is known as taking positive action to encourage applications from people with disabilities and it is legal action under legislation. Where a guaranteed interview is offered it still does not guarantee a job. The candidate still has to be successful at interview and their success relies upon the method used.
Where an organisation relies upon the most traditional methods they could be missing out on a wider variety of talent and skills. There are still people who do not have access to a computer or may not have the skills to present themselves using one. They may have difficulty with reading or understanding written text. This is why it makes good sense to use every method available and encourage more people to consider applying for the job.
