South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust provides the widest range of mental health and substance misuse services in the UK. We provide care and treatment for a local population of 1.1 million people in south London, as well as specialist services for people from across the country.

We provide a full range of mental health services, for people of all ages, from over 100 community sites in south London, three psychiatric hospitals and specialist units based at other hospitals. We provide mental health and social care services in partnership with local authorities. Every year, we provide about 5,000 people with hospital treatment and support about 30,000 people through our community services.

Our services include the Maudsley Hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. We are part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre.

The local area we serve:
We provide mental health and substance misuse services for people living in the London Boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, and substance misuse services for people who live in Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Our local communities have very high levels of mental health needs - up to six times the national rate of psychosis in some areas. There are also high levels of social deprivation and substance misuse, and an ever-changing population, including high numbers of refugees.

Research:
Our unique clinical and academic partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, means that research can directly benefit treatment locally, throughout the UK and internationally. Together, we host the UK's only specialist National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre for mental health.

Education and training:
We provide a wide range of learning opportunities, delivered in part from three hospital based training centres. We provide 14,000 training experiences a year, including e -learning, study days and workshops. We are a leader in the field of involving service users in providing education and training, and provide the most comprehensive mental health NHS library in London.
