Norwood’s vision is that people should live the life they chose. Norwood supports people with learning disabilities and children and families in need. We work with individuals to improve the quality of their lives and achieve their goals. This vision is in line with the Government’s new white paper ‘Valuing Employment Now: Real Jobs for People with Learning Disabilities’ (published in 2009.)

People with learning disabilities are often marginalised by society, which may have a negative effect on their ability or their desire to undertake worthwhile pursuits, leading to reduced options and opportunities. Many of our adult service users are involved in different activities during the day and though they may be enjoyable, for some people these pursuits are not fulfilling enough as they may have higher aspirations and goals for themselves and wish to participate more fully in society.

Acquiring new skills and being included in the workplace is an important part of leading a fulfilling life, bringing increased self-esteem, confidence and inclusion in the wider community to individuals where appropriate. The importance of having a paid job is something we all understand and the people who use our services are no different. They too want to be part of the workplace, earn money, be stimulated and perhaps most importantly, be a valued part of a team.

Norwood has a Person Centred Approach in all that we do; this means placing people with disabilities in control of their own development and life-plan, empowering them to make choices and decisions about the services they receive and the lives they wish to lead. As part of the person centred plan, we help individuals to access appropriate training and employment opportunities, develop their skills, and to find jobs where possible.
